St Patrick´s Day party at Lujon´s-Wednesday, March 17th 1976

I shall now come clean even IF my Stepinac diploma is invalidadted.

Being an inveterate regular at LuJons(now MUCH improved as Dunnes Pub at 15 Shapham Place in White Plains right near the McMahon Funeral Home) and infected with that Stepinac party spirit, it occurred to me to organize a get together. I typedwrote a tiny sign that was repeated to onto a photo copiable sheet

so that eacy copy would give appx. 8 copies. Then cut these little hand bills out to paste onto walls in the senior locker area. I probably told a few dozen classmates. I then-nearly out of my mind-ANNOUNCED this party over the cafeteria microphone without permission of course. What ensued was a blast, mayhem then a police raid. John Sullivan told me that Billy Finn escaped arrest of his 17 year old self climbing over the roof of a police car!!! Maybe 40 guys showed up-any other details of this insane little shindig??

The part about the police showing up, I confess to have forgotten. I lived nearby at Old Mamaroneck Road and may have left early. Please share memories of this fun time. Regards Bill McIntosh

St Pats Lujohn

cant add to the story since I was a good boy back in those days.  I was probably sweeping out the church or helping the elderly across the street.

As I mentioned earlier, if you tipped the bartender, was nice to the regulars and sort of behaved yourself you could do pretty much anything you wanted at LuJohns.  They didn't have any rules, none at all and nothing was ever noticed by anyone.  It was a strange place to say the least!

Garofolo Suspended, Again

One of my many suspensions from school, I got very frustrated one day in math class as it was my weakest subject. Mr. Grubjack who was a really good guy and try to help me was the teacher. I just snapped and lost it and said to him in front of the whole class just take his X Axis and shove it up his Y Intercept. My Dad, may he rest in peace, wanted to kill me, again.

Tom Martin and his bag pipes

Many of us probably remember Tom playing the bag pipes. Years after graduation he told me that playing the bag pipes in public helped him get paying gigs for weddings and other events. It all made sense then.

Gentlemen, what can I say. It was a very good time Friday and Saturday night. I wish all of you peace in your hearts and in your lives. I spoke with Father Gelsomino today, and he still could not get over last evening. He was so very proud to see so many Men of Stepinac come together to be with one another. He says Thank you so very much for honoring him and for remembering him all these years. The Sweat Shirt and Year Book really touched him. He will keep us, the Class of '76 as well as all his former students in his prayers. He once told me that for the occasion of his 50th ordination that I was proud to be invited to, that he had so many former students that he had a committee help him come up with the final guest list. The initial cut got it down to more than 2,500 guests. He literally went through every yearbook from his 35 years at Stepinac, plus all of the wedding masses, baptizms, funeral masses etc., from every parish that he served. It took months just to do that. I think that the final tally of people was in the neighborhood of over 1,000. He said that he will never, ever forget last night and what we did to honor him, and we will certainly never ever forget him. He had not had the strength to blow the substitute trumpet even though he had tried for several weeks. Right before he blew the Sound of Charge last night, he asked God to please let him do it. And He did and so did Father Peter. So remember this as something Father Peter said to me a very long time ago when I had hit a rough patch in my life and was really at a crossroads, Carl, he said, Always have Jesus as the Center of your Life and you can get through anything. I have always remembered this and have tried and not very successfully I am ashamed to admit, do this. Father Peter has given us his Greatest and Best Lesson that he ever could. God Bless each and everyone of you and your families, and God Bless the Bigger Family of ArchBishop Stepinac High School! S-T-E-P-I-N-A-C!

It was like a walk through the past being with you guys last night. I was so proud of each of you for whom you had become. Each of you in a different way contributing to each other and society. While I didn't recognize many of you, I did remember the names and the good times we shared in class, in school, and in Spain.
In education the most important reward any teacher can receive is the gratitude and appreciation one receives from from the students he/she comes in contact with. I was so blessed by your kind words and remembrances of times we spent together.
As I finish my 43rd year in education, I will relish last night as one of the most important highlights of my career.

After so much planning our 40th Reunion Anniversary Weekend has now passed. A tremendous success! Lots of people to thank -- Peter Grabbe as the Dean of this Facebook page which reconnects many of us from the Class of '76 ... too many on the Dinner Organizing Committee to list here but thanks to all of you for putting together a great night and a special shoutout to Top Chef Keith Pugliese (aka Purdy) ... and Greg Filippone and Pat Dorme for a great picnic (despite the weather). For those who missed it, watch out for (hopefully) future batches of Pat's brewskis. Beware that Blond Bitch! Thanks fellas! It was great seeing all of you!

From Peter Reilly

Greetings to Peter Grabbe and my fellow members of the Class of 1976. I don't think I can make the 40th Reunion, but I'd like to give one of my prized possessions to add meaning to the event. I have a Stepinac sweater worn by Fr. Pete during Stepinac pep rallies in 1975. Do you remember when Fr. Pete would blow the trumpet and lead the school in chants of S T E P I N A C? I'll mail the sweater to Peter if you promise to use your influence to get it hung with the football trophies in the hall of fame case. Fr. Pete is one of the great men of Stepinac and this 40-year old sweater pays tribute to him and the school. Let me know what you guys think.

Below is Fr. Peter Gelsomino with my late brother Paul and his wife Regina at a celebration for Fr. Pete. Next to them is the famous Crusader football pep rally sweater worn by Fr. Pete during the 1970s.

All the best,
Peter Reilly
